Wild Berry Essence-Inspired Recipes

Saratoga Water - Wednesday, April 27, 2016

Being both tart and sweet, wild berries have a way of fitting into any meal of the day. Their small size and significant flavor allow them to be versatile on the plate—whether they act as the main ingredient, a hint of flavor or a garnish to compliment a dark chocolate cake. If you’re in need of refreshing recipe ideas for breakfast, lunch, dinner or drinks, at least one of these recipes inspired by our Wild Berry Essence Sparkling Spring Water is sure to help you out!

Berry & Rosemary Juniper Gin Fizz: We think we’ve met Wild Berry Essence’s match, as far as cocktails go. Not rich, but refreshing, and not artificially sweet and sour, but authentically herbaceous and honeyed. Try it out! You’ll be ditching the artificial syrup real quick.

Balsamic Grilled Cherry, Blueberry, Goat Cheese, and Candied Hazelnut Salad: This salad has a delicious wild twist with the cherries pitted, tossed in a balsamic dressing, and grilled until juicy and charred. Sprinkle the balsamic grilled cherries with the blueberries, goat cheese and candied (hazel)nuts on a bed of mixed greens and there you have it—a berry-wild salad.

Chicken with Cherry-Wine Pan Sauce: This effortless recipe from Iowa Girl Eats is perfect for when you don’t have a lot of time to spare, but still want to impress. It only takes 20 minutes to lightly season, sear and smother a few chicken breasts in a dreamy wine-soaked cherry sauce… but if you can spare a few more minutes, the dish pairs deliciously with roasted broccoli or brussels sprouts.

Berry Metabolism-Boosting Smoothie: This Wild Berry Essence-inspired smoothie is perfect for a breakfast on the go, midday snack or pre-workout boost. Not only is it full of healthy fats, protein and antioxidants, but the “secret ingredient” is known for increasing energy and and metabolism!

Easy Quadruple Berry Cobbler: Crispy, chewy, sweet and tart all at the same time…this classic dessert is a wild berry-fan favorite because the six simple ingredients are already in your kitchen and it’s, well, full of an assortment of delicious wild berries.

Tips for Planning a Spring Soiree

Saratoga Water - Tuesday, April 05, 2016

  1. 1. The Timeline: Planning a party can be exciting, but also overwhelming if you don’t know where to start. The best thing to do is to plan early so that everything else can fall into place. Here’s a great party planning checklist to help you every step of the way, no matter how big or small your bash is going to be.

2. Don’t Overdo it with the F&B: Save yourself the time, money and mess by knowing how much you should make. We wouldn’t have been able to plan a party without this helpful guide from Chickabug on how much food and beverage to prepare. (Expert tip: prep as much of the menu ahead of time as possible)

3. Ambiance is Key: The ambiance of a party can make or break a guest’s experience. With that being said, make sure you are appealing to all of the guests’ senses with a great playlist, lighting inside and outside, being mindful of smells, high traffic areas, layout of the room, etc. Throwing a fun party? Make sure your space matches the theme!

4. Drinks Ready, Snacks Handy: Be sure to have your drinks chilled, and easily accessible for guests to grab as soon as they walk in. To alleviate congestion around the main food station and for those who arrive late, have small snacks placed strategically around the house or venue. If you’re unsure of how to organize your space, pretend to be your guest and walk through the venue. Here’s some inspiration you can use for your next beverage station.

5. Set up Drinks with a DIY Cocktail Bar and Food “Bar-Style”: As far as the food goes, letting the guests do the work can be less stress for you and more fun for them. Designating one area for the main finger-food course reduces the mess and allows the guests to pick and choose what they want. Setting up “Make Your Own” food or drink stations like a taco bar or a mimosa bar -- even an ice cream sandwich station -- makes eating another fun activity at your party.

6. Provide a Kid-Friendly Drink Option: If kids are involved, make sure your alcoholic beverage has a virgin version—a great option is to serve punch, lemonade or flavored sparkling water like our all natural Essence. Have the alcohol separate so people who want to drink can add their spirit of choice.

7. Stick to the Theme: Before you buy or DIY your decorations, decide how much time you want to spend decorating. A themed-party can be as simple as using matching cups, plates, and hanging a garland. But if you are game to go all-out, you can make food labels, incorporate straw-toppers, fun lighting, and so much more. Take a look at this tablescape, it really covers every little detail.

8. Be the “Hostess with the Mostest”: You’ve done all this work, it’s time for you to loosen up and enjoy your own party—mix and mingle, show how happy you are to host everyone and don’t forget to introduce your guests to each other. Make sure to thank your guests for attending and share in a toast. The planning and prep are over, enjoy yourself and the company of others.

9. The Clean Up: The whole “clean up, clean up, everybody do your share” song doesn’t always apply here, so when you’ve thrown a big bash, make the process easier on yourself by starting the party with an empty dishwasher and trash cans to fill up and having a fully-stocked cleaning supplies arsenal.

We hope these tips set you up for a great party season. Remember, you’re creating a fun environment for your friends, so enjoy every step of the process. Cheers!

Signs of Dehydration and the Benefits of Drinking Water

Saratoga Water - Wednesday, January 27, 2016

If you’re feeling dizzy, thirsty, and/or have a headache, it could be that you are dealing with a mild case of dehydration. And those are only a few of the minor symptoms. Other, more serious symptoms can include:
  • ·      Confusion
  • ·      Weakness
  • ·      Irritability
  • ·      Constipation
  • ·      Decreased urine output
  • ·      Fainting
  • ·      Fever

Our bodies are made up of 60 percent water, therefore, it is vital to both our physical and mental health to stay hydrated.

Drink water and soak in the many benefits:

Assists with weight loss. A glass of water 30 minutes before each meal can trick your body into being “full”, thus controlling your appetite and the calories you consume. Also, cutting out a sugary soda habit and replacing it with water helps reduces the risk of obesity, stroke, and other heart problems.

Feel refreshed, revitalized, and happy. Water wakes you up, will keep you going, and when you’re feeling energized and on the move, chances are you’re in a good mood. A lack of fluids can lead to muscle fatigue, and result in exhaustion. Drinking more, especially before and after exercise, replenishes the fluids lost from sweating and will keep you moving the remainder of the day.

Healthier skin. Without water, our skin becomes dry, dull, and wrinkled…but drinking the right amount each day allows the body to lock in the moisture it needs to create stronger, more radiant skin.

Cleansing. Water cleanses the body by flushing out the waste through urine, and according to Women’s Health, if your urine is “extra yellow”, it could mean that your body is over concentrated with toxins.

Balance within the body. A sufficient amount of water maintains the many functions within your body, such as (but not limited to): digestion, absorption, circulation, body temperature, bowel movement, and the transportation of nutrients.

How To Get in the Habit of Drinking More Water:

A great way to avoid dehydration is to begin each day with a glass of water. Reach for water before your coffee and you’ll start to feel refreshed and awake sooner. Practices like keeping a bottle of water always at your side, in your bag or at your desk is a great reminder to drink up. Have you tried sipping through a straw, or setting a goal to drink water before every meal? These little tricks will go a long way in helping  you form this daily, healthy habit.

At times we may avoid drinking regular water because the taste can be, well, boring. Luckily Saratoga Spring Water has three Sparkling Essence flavors, infused with the essence of natural fruit and no added sweeteners. And good news—according to Live Strong, sparkling water is just as hydrating as still water!

This vegetarian dish is always a crowd-pleaser! Serve it as an appetizer or if you’re looking for a heartier meal, serve with grilled chicken or shrimp. Pair this with our Orange-Tangerine Saratoga Essence for even more zest.

Ingredients:
• 4 small zucchini, cut into 1/2-inch thick rounds (about 1 1/2 pounds)
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• Kosher salt
• 4 round, pocketless whole-grain pita
• 1/3 cup prepared hummus
• 1/4 cup crumbled goat cheese
• 2 cups baby arugula
• 1/4 cup chopped almonds
• 1 lemon, quartered, for serving

Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Place the zucchini on a baking sheet. Drizzle with the olive oil, then sprinkle with 1 teaspoon salt; mix well and spread to 1 layer. Roast until browned and very tender, about 30 minutes, stirring halfway through.
2. Warm the pita on a grill or griddle until nicely toasted, but still soft, and spread each with 1 heaping tablespoon hummus. Top each piece with 1 tablespoon crumbled goat cheese, 1/4 of the roasted zucchini, about 1/2 cup baby arugula, and 1 tablespoon coarsely chopped almonds. Serve with a lemon wedge.

Chicken and Sun-Dried Tomato Meatballs
A lighter version of the traditional meatball with a little bit of a twist. Total time to prepare this delicious entrée is only 30 minutes.

Ingredients:
• 4 oil-packed sun-dried tomato halves, drained and blotted dry
• 2 garlic cloves
• 1 large jalapeño—halved, seeded and coarsely chopped
• Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
• 1/4 cup fine dry bread crumbs
• 1 pound ground chicken breast
• 1 large egg, lightly beaten
• 1 tablespoon fat-free milk
• 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, for dusting
• One 14 1/2-ounce can peeled whole tomatoes with their juices
• 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
• 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
• 1 tablespoon chopped flat-leaf parsley

Directions:
1. In a food processor, pulse the sun-dried tomatoes, 1 garlic clove, half of the jalapeño, 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/8 teaspoon of pepper until finely chopped. Add the bread crumbs and pulse to combine. Transfer the mixture to a large bowl and stir in the chicken, egg and milk. Using lightly moistened hands, roll the mixture into 20 meatballs, a scant 1 1/2 tablespoons each. Dust the meatballs lightly with flour, tapping off any excess.
2. Wipe out the food processor and add the remaining garlic clove and jalapeño half; pulse until chopped. Add the tomatoes and their juices and the oregano and process until smooth.
3. In a 9-inch cast-iron skillet, heat the olive oil until shimmering. Add the meatballs and cook over moderate heat, turning, until golden but not quite cooked through, 5 to 6 minutes. Transfer to a plate. Add the tomato sauce to the skillet and simmer until slightly thickened, about 2 minutes. Return the meatballs to the skillet and simmer, turning, until just cooked through, about 2 minutes longer. Transfer to a bowl, sprinkle with the parsley and serve.
